2026 WCQ: Former Bafana goalie Khune says Bassey’s goal isn’t authentic

Calvin Bassey’s goal for Nigeria ought to have been disqualified, according to former Bafana Bafana goalie Itumeleng Khune.

South Africa took the lead in the 25th minute when Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong put the ball into his own net.

Bassey, a defender for Fulham, headed in the 45th minute to give Nigeria an equalizer.

But before it entered the net, the ball struck Bassey’s hand.

The center referee rejected the Bafana Bafana players’ subsequent protests.

Khune, who was disappointed, claimed that if VAR had been used during the match, the goal would have been disallowed.

The referee was in a good position to see that, so I’m not sure how he missed it. Since Bassey jumped more than anyone else, his linesman may have noticed it if he hadn’t,” Khune stated on SABC.
