Northerners will find it hard to believe Peter Obi’s promise to serve only one four-year term in power, according to Yabagi Sani, the chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Committee, or IPAC.
Speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Tuesday, Sani claimed that Obi and the other candidates vying for the presidency in 2027 are not perfect.
Obi assured his fans during an X Space on Sunday that if he wins the 2027 presidential election, he would serve only one four-year term.
But when politicians take government, the dynamics of power change, according to the IPAC chair.
According to Sani, the northern part of Nigeria ought to elect the nation’s president following eight years of southern control, in accordance with the notion of power rotation.
He pointed out that South-West All Progressives Congress (APC) President Bola Tinubu is running for reelection and will finish his four-year term in May 2027.
“Yes, Mr. Peter Obi can agree to say, ‘I am going to do one term,’ but the northerners will tell you that if Bola Tinubu wins the (second) election after his term, it should end up in the North,” Sani stated.
However, we are only human. Absolute power leads to absolute corruption. There is nothing supernatural about Peter Obi; he is not a saint. Subsequent administrations have attempted to amend the constitution in order to grant themselves a third term and other privileges.
For this reason, many people would find it hard to accept that Mr. Peter Obi would quit after just one term. Then, considering the sentimental nature of it, state capture, and the force of incumbency, how would he even succeed?
