President Bola Tinubu has come under fire from lawyer and politician Kenneth Okonkwo for taking a vacation in Paris while Nigerians endure increasing poverty, insecurity, and subpar public services.
In an interview with Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily on Thursday, Okonkwo called Nigeria “a country in distress,” pointing to pervasive instability in several vital areas.
“The President claims to be taking a leave of absence from work, but people are dying in Katsina and Zamfara,” Okonkwo said.
Nowadays, it is impossible to promote tourism or establish a conducive work environment in any part of Nigeria.
He pointed out that the healthcare and education systems are in danger of collapsing, that unions are threatening new strikes, and that contractors in the oil industry have not received payment since 2024.
“Take a look at NEPA’s situation and our educational system, where ASUU is threatening to go on strike again. This is blatant evidence of educational instability. The instability in healthcare is being exposed by the threat of strike by doctors and nurses, he said.
The attorney also cautioned that the nation is currently experiencing frighteningly high levels of suffering.
Nigeria now has a higher number of undernourished children than Sudan. A woman recently lost a child to malaria because she was unable to pay for transportation to the hospital.
“This is how much suffering Nigerians are going through,” he bemoaned.
