The continuous dissemination of unlawful, deceptive, and false messages directed at applicants who registered for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination has been condemned by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, the spokesperson for JAMB, claimed that the texts were being spread by alleged scammers in an attempt to trick unwary people.
Benjamin stated that in order to develop a fraudulent code that imitates JAMB’s official messaging system, the criminals had taken advantage of the numerical form of UTME, 8863, and combined it with the Board’s short code, 55019.
He claims that as part of this fraudulent scam, they have been sending candidates fake communications claiming to have discovered alterations in their JAMB information and advising them to get in touch with specific people who would “assist” in resolving these invented difficulties.
“We want to emphasise that these messages are not from JAMB. Security agencies have been notified and are actively tracking the perpetrators behind this scam.
“Candidates are strongly advised to ignore such messages. This is a common tactic employed by fraudsters who seek to exploit the examination period to deceive and defraud innocent candidates.”
He, therefore, urged the general public to remain vigilant and critically assess the messages they receive, adding that any communication that does not align with JAMB’s official channels or uses suspicious language or instructions should be treated as fraudulent.
