According to former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) continued existence is contingent upon rigorous adherence to both its 1999 Constitution and its own constitution.
This was said by Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, at a meeting with former Governors Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), Samuel Ortom (Benue), and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu) on Monday in Abuja.
Senator Anyanwu, former Senate Minority Leader Philip Aduda, current and past federal and state lawmakers, as well as state and zonal party officials, were also present at the meeting.
Those who visited him, according to Wike, are PDP stakeholders who support the party’s continued existence.
Wike claims that if the PDP had followed the “Group of Five Governors’ (G5)” advice, it would not have been forced into its current predicament.
The agitation of the five governors for presidential rotation or zoning, he recalled, has stabilized the political system.
He warned against unfair treatment and questioned why only Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the National Secretary, was barred from resuming his duties following his defeat in the Imo State governorship election.
Wike stated: “Everyone present is dedicated to ensuring the survival of our party, not just when speaking on television or in newspapers, but on all levels of the party.”
“Thanks to the efforts of the G5 Governors, this nation is now stable. You might detest us, or you might enjoy us. In actuality, this nation would have been in catastrophe if the G5 had not made the choice we did.
“The right thing had to be done, and we still stand by that judgment regardless of who the beneficiary was.
“We would not be where we are now if the party had heeded our advice, and we have persisted in reminding them to respect the party’s and the nation’s constitutions.”
