Australia has formally qualified for the FIFA World Cup in 2026, making it the eleventh country to do so.
Yesterday, the Socceroos defeated Saudi Arabia 2-1 to secure their spot. After defeating Japan 1-0 in their last game, Australia needed to avoid suffering a crushing loss—one that was less than five goals in Jeddah—in order to advance.
Australia has qualified for the World Cup automatically for the first time in twelve years.
They will also be attending the global tournament for the sixth time in a row. In the 19th minute, Abdulrahman Al-Aboud gave Saudi Arabia the lead, but Australia rallied with goals from Mitch Duke and Connor Metcalfe to win the match.
Australia is currently one of the most recent teams to qualify, along with Jordan and Uzbekistan.
Argentina, Japan, New Zealand, and Iran are among the other countries that have already reserved their seats. The US, Canada, and Mexico automatically qualified for the tournament as co-hosts.
