Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto, has said that “enough is enough” and denounced the murders in Benue State.
“Nigeria must not tolerate such senseless killings, regardless of race, ethnicity, or political affiliation,” Abubakar said.
Since armed herders attacked Yelewata in Guma Local Government Area on June 14, Benue State has seen a surge of attacks that have claimed the lives of over 300 people.
Abubakar criticized the security agencies’ failure to foresee these attacks in his condemnation.
His remarks were conveyed in a statement issued by the Secretary-General of the Jama’atu Nasril Islam, JNI, Professor Khalid Abubakar Aliyu, titled “Time to rise beyond lamentations as Benue bleeds again.”
The statement reads: “Enough is enough. Our collective silence or indifference may only serve to embolden the enemies of peace and national unity in Nigeria.
“JNI prays to Almighty Allah to console the victims’ families, and restore lasting peace and tranquility in Benue State and the entire country.
“Let this be a time for national introspection as we grieve alongside Benue State. Let’s reject divisive discourse and unite as a human race to say “No More” to needless murders, irrespective of political affiliation, race, religion, or ethnicity! As we have said time and time again, human life is sacrosanct and must be respected as such.
We also offer our condolences to the Benue State administration and its fine citizens for the terrible incident. Indeed, such carnage should not be accepted as usual in any rational society.
