Gbenga Daniel, the senator for Ogun East, has paid respects to Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona ll, the Awujale and supreme monarch of Ijebuland, who passed away at the age of 91.
After signing the condolence register at the late monarch’s private residence, the former governor of Ogun State talked to reporters.
Daniel said that the monarch’s paternal support would be missed and called the Awujale’s departure “dreadful.”
After caring for this people for the past 60 years, he stated, “It is a very painful death and probably one of the longest serving monarchs in Nigeria.”
Because the people of Ijebuland have become accustomed to his paternal support—a magnificent godfather who has successfully traversed the terrain—the situation there cannot return to normal.
As a sign of honour and respect for the deceased king, Dare Alebiosu, the chairman of the Ijebu Ode local government, announced the temporary shutdown of all three major markets in Ijebu-Ode.
The affected markets include Ita-Ale, Ita-Osu, and Oke-Aje, with the closure taking effect from Monday, 14th July 2025.
The shutdown is in line with ancient norms and aims to give all of Ijebuland’s sons and daughters a place to grieve, Alebiosu said in a statement provided to reporters.
“After consulting with the relevant traditional authorities, normal market activities will resume on a date to be announced in due course.
We implore all merchants and locals to abide by the rules amicably and with dignity. “May our beloved Kabiyesi’s soul rest in perfect peace,” he continued.
