Stakeholders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kaduna State have urged the party’s interim national leadership, led by former Senate President David Mark, to shield them from acts of intolerance, discrimination, and lawlessness committed by some members of the state ahead of the general elections in 2027.
This demand was made at a news conference on Monday by the coalition of ADC stakeholders, which was led by Alhaji Ahmed Tijjani Mustapha, Mr. Patrick Didam, Alh. Ibrahim Suleiman, and others.
They pointed out that the ADC-led opposition coalition needs to be focused on producing elected leaders with distinct personalities.
The stakeholders believe that ADC should never be forced to choose a presidential candidate.
As Kaduna State stakeholders, we would want to request the national leadership’s protection in order to avoid another political setback under the guise of an effort to save Nigerian democracy.
“Political leaders that exhibit intolerance will produce realities like discrimination, self-interest, and lawlessness. If this is permitted, such a political leader’s default attitude will be to impose their will and use election manipulation to win. Today’s elected officials primarily exhibit these traits, which the alliance and ADC seek to alter.
“Under no circumstances should anyone trample on internal democracy inside the Coalition and ADC by using the deceptive approach of establishing a so-called consensus. Meetings must be held and members must have the freedom to express themselves, including the ability to disagree with political leaders and present superior alternatives, in order to achieve the new direction, they said.
This comes as leaders of the opposition alliance, including former Nigerian Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola, Nasir El-Rufai, Peter Obi of the Labour Party, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, have endorsed the ADC’s bid to depose incumbent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.
