In celebration of International Chess Day, Chess for Social Impact (a key project of the Mendlife Global Foundation) organized the Abuja Elite Chess Meetup at Cafe One in Sterling Bank Plaza. The event featured both a high-level competition and a fundraiser for Tennyson Olisa, Nigeria’s emerging chess talent.
This year’s theme, “Every Move Counts,” emphasized the tactics of chess and the significance of every step in a young athlete’s progression
Oto-obong Mendie (Cassandra), the founder, underscored that the event represented a transformation through chess rather than merely a tournament. “Our purpose here is to honor chess as a catalyst for transformation. “This year, we are concentrating on assisting Tennyson Olisa, who is bringing pride to Nigeria,” she stated. Tennyson, 22, requires financial assistance to participate in the FIDE Grand Swiss in Uzbekistan and the World Cup in India. His journey necessitates around 54 million to cover expenses like travel, coaching, and lodging. Mendie highlighted how crucial it was to provide Tennyson with a worldwide platform. “He possesses the talent and heart — now he requires support,” she added.
His elder brother Engr. Anthony Olisa, who manages Tennyson, shared that the event was designed to enhance his visibility and draw in sponsors. “He’s accomplishing remarkable things for Nigeria and has earned a spot among Africa’s elite,” he said
