Peter Obi, a former Labour Party presidential candidate, has criticized President Bola Tinubu for his recently announced 12-day trip to Brazil and Japan, calling it insensitive to the nation’s deteriorating circumstances.
Obi claimed in a statement released on Thursday through X that the President’s frequent international trips demonstrate a lack of concern for Nigeria’s urgent issues, including its economic hardship and insecurity.Tinubu will leave Abuja on Thursday, according to BASEMEDIA, with a stop in Dubai before traveling to Yokohama, Japan, to attend the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), which will take place from August 20 to 22. Obi, however, questioned the purpose of the trip, pointing out that Tinubu should prioritize visiting crisis-hit states in Nigeria after his recent visit to Brazil and meeting with its president. Before attending the BRICS Summit, where Nigeria only took part as an observer, Tinubu spent a week in St. Lucia during a recent foreign engagement, he recalled. Obi asked the president to cut back on pointless foreign engagements and, if required, shorten them. According to him, Tinubu ought to travel the country and observe the plight of the people. “Assuring that our people have food on their tables, economic stability, and the safety of lives and property are what our country needs right now. Nigerians are aware that our enormous problems will take time to resolve, but they still want to see unwavering dedication and 100% effort,” Obisaid said.
