Vote buying is an investment in corruption, and former Labour Party presidential candidate Mr. Peter Obi has urged Nigerians to oppose it.
On Monday, Obi posted the warning on his X handle.
The former governor of Anambra state urged people to register, obtain, and protect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), calling them the “bridge to a new Nigeria.”
He claimed that people who purchase votes do so in order to obtain public funds for their own benefit.
Vote-buyers are not giving you charity; instead, they are funding their own corruption. They purchase votes in order to gain access to our Treasury and embezzle public funds. These individuals are criminals in disguise, not leaders,” Obi wrote.
Selling votes, the former governor of Anambra State cautioned, is equivalent to mortgaging future chances for employment, healthcare, and education.
He emphasized that Nigerians must assume responsibility by choosing leaders who possess “competence, character, capacity, and compassion” if they want democracy to flourish.
“Our democracy is on the line.” For this reason, I implore all eligible Nigerians to register, acquire, and protect their PVC, and when the time comes, make prudent use of it,” he continued.
