Ese Brume, a long jumper from Nigeria, will begin her season this weekend in Des Moines, Iowa, at the 115th Drake Relays.
Top-tier amateur and professional athletes from all over the world are expected to attend this tournament, making it a noteworthy event on the track and field calendar.
After placing fifth in the August 2024 Olympics in Paris, Ese Brume is making her competitive comeback this weekend.
She suffered a severe vehicle accident in the United States last December, but she has recovered with incredible fortitude. She started mild training in March after suffering a strained neck and a sprained ankle.
Brume will compete against a strong field that includes Quanesha Brooks, a 2021 Olympian, and Tara Davis-Woodhall, the 2024 Olympic gold medalist and three-time U.S. champion.
Brume has high expectations for her performance and is determined to regain her podium position as she begins a World Championship year.
In an interview with Making of Champions, Brume reflected on her time in Paris and said she felt more determined than ever.
“I must admit, I had an incredible experience,” she remarked. “In retrospect, injuries prevented me from competing much this year. I promise myself and the world that this will be the last time I miss out on a medal at a major competition.”
With a stellar career that includes two Commonwealth gold medals, four African titles, and the African record in women’s long jump—a staggering 7.17 meters in 2021—Brume, 29, is already one of Nigeria’s most renowned athletes.
