Marc Cucurella, a defender for Spain, has stated that UEFA altered the regulations due to a contentious handball he committed during a quarterfinal match against Germany in 2024.
Cucurella, however, has maintained that it was intentional.
Cucurella’s arm was struck by the ball within the area, but the referee decided not to give him a penalty.
Mikel Merino scored a header in stoppage time to give Spain a 2-1 victory.
The ruling questioned the subjectivity of handball calls made in accordance with the then-existing laws.
“Yes, that handball has been played all over the world,” Cucurella said to AS.
Actually, when UEFA came to speak to us recently, they mentioned my handball against Germany as an example.
“And they told me that they had to change the rules because of me.”
“They took a shot at me from close range and the ball hit me, but I didn’t mean to hit it with my hand, I didn’t do it on purpose,” he said, refuting the claim that he intentionally attempted to handle the ball.
“Dude, I would have been Spain’s most despised person.”
