Former Kogi West Senator Dino Melaye’s comments that President Bola Tinubu’s administration might begin accepting loans from Nigeria’s top Fintech firms, Opay and Moniepoint, were rejected on Tuesday by former presidential spokesman and journalist Reuben Abati.
According to Abati, the Tinubu administration does not require the type of funding that Opay and Moniepoint loans provide.
Melaye had criticized the President’s assertion that the nation had reached its revenue targets for 2025 and charged Tinubu’s government with being careless.
However, Abati stated during his appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show, “You cannot expect Dino Melaye to commend Tinubu’s administration because he is a chieftain of the opposition party, the ADC.
He is accusing the president of borrowing because he is a very vocal and articulate person. Let’s examine the specifics now. According to President Tinubu, “We are not borrowing from Nigerian banks, and we have met revenue projections and are making a lot of money from non-oil.”
The fact that Melaye is discussing borrowing from MoniePoint and Opay surprises me. In terms of capacity, I don’t believe the Nigerian government will be seeking that kind of funding.
He also asserted that Tinubu owns a yacht between Monaco and another location that was funded by Nigerian taxpayers. That is not accurate; the Buhari administration was the one who brought up the subject of yachts in the 2023 Supplementary Budget, not the Tinubu administration.
When the controversy first arose, many questioned why the president should have a yacht. The Navy stated that the Presidential yacht was a ship they used for naval operations and was not for President Tinubu. Therefore, it was not a luxury purchase, but in politics, anything dramatic can be brought up.
