The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has described the turnout of underaged Nigerians during the ongoing nationwide Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) exercise as unacceptable.
This development was made known by the Osun INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Mutiu Agboke, while speaking on a radio program, The Dialogue on Dynasty 89.9 FM, Oyo
Agboke stated that only Nigerians aged 18 and up are eligible to participate in the ongoing CVR exercise.
Agboke explained that while INEC appreciated the turnout of the eligible voters to participate in the exercise, it will not allow underage Nigerians to register.
The Osun INEC boss added that underage registration remained a criminal act and the commission will not allow it in whatever guise.
According to him, “the electoral umpire is impressed with the citizens and other relevant stakeholders for mobilizing for civic participation in the exercise.
Numerous underage Nigerians have been trying to register for the current registration drive, but we have made it clear that they will not be permitted.
“Anyone who encourages underage registration or those under the age of 18 to register in the hopes that they will reach the legal voting age by the time of the general election in 2027 is breaking the law,” he stated.
Among other issues, Agboke asked the pertinent parties to help the Commission deal with underage registration.
