Niger State Governor Mohammed Umar Bago launched a crackdown on vandalism of public and private properties with a meeting with the leadership of the state chapter of the Association of Scrap and Waste Dealers Employers of Nigeria.
Bago, during the meeting held at the Government House in Minna, said it was organized to find a permanent solution to the persistent vandalism of structures and theft of public facilities.
Bago condemned the ongoing vandalism and theft of valuables in private and public buildings by suspected criminals posing as members of the Scrap Association.
He clarified that the government will not stand by and let criminal organizations operating under the pretense of scrap dealers continue to vandalize buildings and steal valuables. The governor asked the scrap dealers’ leaders to clean up their operations by identifying their members and assisting in the removal of bad actors.
He said, “We are going to have another meeting with the heads of security agencies in the state and all of the association’s important stakeholders from the 25 local government areas to review the association’s operational guidelines.”
In that regard, we will submit an executive bill to the State Assembly, and those who violate it will face legal action.
In order to stop the movement of uncertified scraps, he also urged the association’s task force to increase their efforts, especially at the state’s main entry and exit points.
In response, Mallam Mohammed Ahmed, the chairman of the state chapter of the Association of Scrap and Waste Dealers Employers of Nigeria, stated that the organization intended to implement identity cards and uniforms as a means of reducing members’ sharp practices.
