The National Legal Adviser of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Kamaldeen Ajibade, has claimed the party’s decision to zone its presidential ticket to the South does not bar contenders from other regions from contesting.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show on Monday, Ajibade made this claim.
He clarified that although zoning is a component of the PDP’s internal policies for equality and balance, it cannot supersede the Nigerian Constitution, which guarantees every citizen the right to run for office.I would like to focus on one specific facet of your inquiry. We ought to discuss our presidential candidate’s zoning to the South. The zoning, namely to the South, is related to our internal democracy and our Constitution, which mandates that we balance and do zoning. However, if someone else feels qualified to run, that won’t stop them from doing so. As a general rule, we cannot do anything that would violate the Nigerian Constitution. People from all around the nation will still express interest in our presidential candidate, even if we zone them to the South. Since everyone has the right to run for office under the Nigerian Constitution, we are powerless to stop that,” he stated.
Along with emphasizing the value of harmony and togetherness within the party, the PDP legal adviser cautioned politicians against putting their individual goals before of the PDP’s overall interests.
He acknowledged that ambition was a major factor in previous conflicts, such as the split among the G5 governors, but he also pointed out that the party had made great strides in resolving its internal problems.
Ajibade was upbeat about the members’ renewed unity and dedication to advancing the party.
