Nigeria’s Flying Eagles defeated Egypt in a friendly match before the 2025 Under-20 AFCON

At the Cairo International Stadium on Tuesday, the Nigerian Flying Eagles defeated the Egyptian Young Pharaohs 2-1 after a fierce battle.
The match served as a crucial part of both teams’ preparations for the upcoming 2025 Africa Under-20 Cup of Nations.

With forward Kparobo Arierhi making an immediate impact and showcasing excellent positioning and skill as he latched onto a precisely weighted pass from Bidemi Amole, the Flying Eagles got off to a strong start in the match. Arierhi’s goal set a dynamic pace for the game and demonstrated the team’s confidence after their recent victory in the WAFU B championship.

The Young Pharaohs, however, reacted resolutely. In the 65th minute, Ahmed Kaabaka took advantage of a defensive lapse by Nigeria to score the equalizer.

The suspense increased as the game neared its conclusion. After Divine Oliseh was fouled in the box, Precious Benjamin was given a penalty in the 83rd minute, giving Nigeria the lead again.

To the joy of his coaching staff and supporters alike, Benjamin displayed poise under duress by accurately converting the spot-kick and regaining Nigeria’s advantage.

Nigeria has won the Africa Under-20 title seven times, thus this victory not only boosts their spirits but also comes at a crucial moment as the team arrives in Cairo less than 48 hours before the game. The Flying Eagles now turn their attention to the forthcoming tournament, which begins on Sunday, after this victory.

Nigeria’s Group B campaign will kick off next Thursday against Tunisia, with difficult matches against Morocco and Kenya to follow.

As they look to win on home soil, hosts Egypt, who are in Group A, will play South Africa to begin the tournament before playing Sierra Leone, Zambia, and Tanzania.
