This was said by Oshoma on Wednesday during his guest appearance on Channels Television’s “Politics Today” program. This came soon after President Bola Tinubu declared the state no longer under emergency. The politicians, in my opinion, have not learned anything. It is simple because you have a former governor who has one leg in the PDP and one leg in the APC, as we have seen today in a PDP state,” Oshoma stated.
As BASEMEDIA remembers, on March 18, President Tinubu suspended members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.
After political infighting since 2023 crippled the legislature, Tinubu replaced Fubara with Vice-Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd) to lead state affairs for six months.
Citing the ongoing crisis that had shook the oil-rich state at the time, Tinubu invoked Section 305(5) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
The declaration of emergency was denounced by numerous political analysts who claimed it was unconstitutional.
Given that Fubara is a governor chosen by the People’s Democratic Party, Oshoma claimed the declaration was unfair.
He asserts that many people would have viewed the declaration as justified if it had been made in a core state that is under the control of the All Progressives Congress, or APC, of which Tinubu is the leader.
“In Rivers, the president can impose a state of emergency without dismissing the state’s legitimately elected government. Without overthrowing a democratically elected government, you can still send the army, police, and DSS to the state to keep the peace,” he continued.
