Argentina’s record for the most Ballon d’Or awards earned has now been surpassed by France.
This comes after Osumane Dembele of Paris Saint-Germain defeated Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal to win the 2025 Ballon d’Or on Monday night in Paris.
Argentina had eight Ballon d’Or victories prior to the France international’s victory, all of which were accomplished under their captain, Lionel Messi.
But France currently has eight wins overall, tying Argentina.
They accomplished this by using more individual players; Dembele, Karim Benzema, Zinédine Zidane, and Michel Platini were among the six players who won.
With seven victories apiece, teams like Portugal, the Netherlands, and Germany are tied for third position.
Following Dembele’s victory, the nations with the most Ballon d’Or victories are:
Argentina: 8
France: 8
Germany: 7
Netherlands: 7
Portugal: 7 (including five victories for Cristiano Ronaldo)
Italy: 5
Brazil: 5
England: 5
