The African Democratic Congress (ADC) spokesman, Bolaji Abdullahi, has criticized the Federal Government’s decision to call off the 65th Independence Anniversary parade, calling it yet another example of the president’s lack of communication with the Nigerian people.
The parade, which was supposed to take place in Abuja on October 1, was canceled, the Federal Government said Monday.
However, other anniversary events will proceed as scheduled.
However, Abdullahi criticized the decision in an exclusive interview with BASEMEDIA on Tuesday, stating that the parade is a symbolic event that shouldn’t be called off.
“This celebration of independence marks a significant turning point. Nigeria has the chance to showcase itself to the world and encourage people to have faith in their nation and government again. But once again, what did the government do?
“I’m positive that the President’s absence from Abuja is the reason the presidency called off the parade. Unless he returned without the public knowing, he was in Lagos when I last checked.
Everyone eagerly awaited this moment of independence. What caused the abrupt cancellation, then? What took place?
They may argue that the cancellation was appropriate given the current economic climate and the government’s cautious approach. But when did they suddenly recognize that the nation was facing an economic crisis? Did they not take into account the economic reality at the time they were sending out invitations? They owe it to Nigerians to be open and honest about whatever they are concealing. And we’d find out soon. Our nation’s identity is not reflected in this choice. It’s just another instance of the president abstaining.
Additionally, he questioned why President Bola Tinubu did not attend other significant national events in recent years, such as the Nigerian Defense Academy’s passing-out parade, stating that such absences raise questions about the government’s priorities.
