Popular cleric Sheikh Lawal Shuaib Abubakar, also called Sheikh Triumph, has been suspended from teaching and preaching by the Kano State Shura Committee until the conclusion of an investigation into blasphemy claims.
Following a review meeting, Shehu Wada Sagagi, the secretary of the committee, informed reporters that they had listened to and watched recordings of the cleric before reaching a decision.
We reconvened today to discuss the accusations made against Sheikh Triumph. We watched and listened to his sermons on tape. We distinguished between the claims that were unsupported by evidence and those that were. Every confirmed point has been recorded, according to Sagagi.
He clarified that a formal letter inviting the cleric to appear before the committee and defend himself would be sent to him. He is suspended until then. The committee will send its recommendations to the government for action following his defense.
Sheikh Triumph is accused of making derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad (SAW), casting doubt on certain aspects of his birth story, and implying that the Prophet’s parents were in hell fire, according to reports.
Before the final decision is made, Sagagi promised to give the cleric ample opportunity to appear and respond.
