Former Education Minister Obiageli Ezekwesili has expressed concern over what she calls the takeover of democracy by powerful interests, cautioning that citizens have become sidelined in the democratic process.
During an appearance on Arise Television’s news program on Thursday, Ezekwesili explained that democracy is no longer working effectively because it has been eroded over time, leaving people feeling powerless and disconnected.
“Democracy is being captured by the powerful in many societies where it exists. The marginalization of citizens happened gradually, as people realized that the social contract with the state was failing them,” she said.
She added that as citizens withdraw from active participation, space is created for state capture, while regulatory institutions have also been compromised.
Ezekwesili pointed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the judiciary as examples of bodies that have lost public trust.
“INEC, as the electoral umpire, is compromised. They no longer have society’s confidence. The judiciary has also become involved in political maneuvering. So when you have this kind of complicated situation, you get the huge problems we face today,” she noted.
She further said that globally, efforts are underway to restore citizens to the center of governance, emphasizing that freedom and citizen engagement are crucial for innovation and social progress.
