The Ogun State Government has shut down the Adatan Market in Abeokuta due to serious environmental violations and unauthorized selling along the roads.
Farouk Akintunde, who serves as both the Governor’s Special Adviser on OGEPA and Chairman of the Environmental Compliance Task Force, confirmed the closure after an enforcement exercise on Tuesday. He explained that the market was sealed because traders were dumping trash into drainage systems and cluttering walkways and drains with their merchandise.
Akintunde warned that the government will no longer accept such disregard for environmental laws. He instructed all market traders in Ogun State to maintain the drainage channels near their shops and stressed that the mandatory Thursday market sanitation day must be strictly observed.
The closure follows multiple warnings and failed engagements with the traders over several months, underscoring the state’s zero-tolerance policy toward environmental pollution. Following this, two other Abeokuta businesses—Alaga Restaurant and Cintinatti Bar—were also sealed for improperly discharging wastewater into the environment.
