According to legal expert Frank Tietie, a presidential pardon is irrevocable once it has been issued.
During a Wednesday interview on Arise Television, Tietie addressed President Bola Tinubu’s action of rescinding a list of pardons previously granted to various convicted individuals.
Tietie’s comments came after the recall that President Tinubu recently changed the death sentence given to Maryam Sanda to a 12-year prison term.
Tietie asserted that the initial signing of the pardon list constituted a “complete act” which the President lacks the authority to reverse, as the pardons had already been accepted and those individuals were considered free.
He argued that the President “is not the judiciary” and cannot wield judicial power to declare someone “no longer fit for pardon,” stating this is outside of the President’s constitutional mandate.
Tietie also humorously noted that if the President were “listening,” he would instead reverse the fuel subsidy removal and tariff increases.
