Ted Cruz, a senator from the United States, has claimed that certain Nigerian government officials are involved in attacks that target Christians in the nation.
Cruz made the assertion on Tuesday during a Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee hearing on the US counterterrorism strategy in Africa.
On Wednesday, attempts to get a formal response from the Federal Government failed.
Speaking in the UK, former information minister Lai Mohammed insisted that more Muslims than Christians have been killed by Boko Haram’s insurgent activities.
Cruz claimed during the hearing that Nigeria has the highest number of Christians killed worldwide due to their faith.
He asserted that since 2009, more than 20,000 churches, schools, and other places of worship have been destroyed, and over 50,000 Christians have been killed.
Cruz declared, “Unfortunately, Nigerian officials had been complicit in facilitating these atrocities.”
He criticized Nigerian authorities for what he called a tardy response to the nation’s security issues and partially blamed the violence on the application of Sharia law in some northern states.
The senator also mentioned an earlier meeting with Nigerian security and defense officials in which they were assured that strong measures would be taken to stop the violence. But he pointed out that those promises have not yet produced noticeable outcomes.
“I informed them that I would assess their dedication based on the outcomes. He continued, “Those outcomes have not yet materialized.”
Cruz also revealed that he introduced the Nigeria Religious Freedom Accountability Act of 2025 in October. He explained that the purpose of the proposed legislation is to hold Nigerian officials responsible for alleged involvement in attacks against Christians.
