In advance of the August 15 governorship election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been urged by the Action Peoples Party (APP) in Osun State to bolster the security of its technology systems.
Additionally, the party issued a warning against any manipulation that might damage the poll’s legitimacy on August 15.
Odesola Oluseye Titus, the chairman of the Osun APP, issued a statement on Sunday urging electoral officials to act quickly to protect all technology-related aspects of the election process from fraud and unauthorised interference.
In order to prevent unauthorised access to electoral data, he called for stricter verification of the voters’ register, the correct operation of card readers, and more robust security measures.
“We implore INEC to act quickly to guarantee that all electoral-related technological systems are protected from fraudulent activity.
“This includes protecting against unauthorised access to data, the proper operation of card readers, and rigors verification of the voters’ register,” he stated.
The APP insisted that all eligible voters be permitted to freely and fairly participate in the election and urged the electoral body to continue being watchful and proactive in resolving any technical issues.
The statement went on, “We call on INEC to uphold its responsibility to the citizens and ensure that the electoral process is transparent, credible, and free from any form of technical tampering.”
The party claimed to be voicing Osun State residents’ worries about purported technical issues that were brought up during the most recent Ekiti State governorship election.
The APP reports that “reports emerging from the Ekiti poll have raised questions about the reliability and transparency of some electoral practices, prompting calls for greater scrutiny of the technology deployed in future elections.”
“The alleged technical irregularities that were reported during the recent Ekiti State Governorship Election have been observed with increasing alarm by the residents of Osun State.”
The party emphasised that election integrity is still of utmost importance and issued a warning that the people of the state would not tolerate any attempt to manipulate the democratic process through technological means.
“We want to make it clear that Osun State residents will not put up with any kind of technical manipulation or rigging that jeopardises the democratic process.
“We will not hesitate to mobilise against any strategies aimed at disenfranchising voters or manipulating the August 15 governorship election result,” he declared. “The people of Osun State are watching closely.”
The APP expressed hope that INEC would guarantee that the upcoming governorship election would be held in accordance with the strictest guidelines for honesty, openness, and equity.
