Gift Eseeli, a 38-year-old employee of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), was arrested on suspicion of cable theft at Rafa Yard, which is located along the Warri-Itakpe Train Service (WITS) route.
Officers from the Man O’ War Railway Command arrested the man.
Initial investigations show that several lengths of 50mm armoured signal wire had been removed from the trackside installations before vigilant personnel under the command of Williams Agiake intervened and took the suspect into custody, according to NRC spokeswoman Callistus Unyimadu.
According to Naija News, the Nigerian Police Force has started a thorough investigation after receiving the recovered stolen goods in full.
The Managing Director/CEO, Kayode Opeifa, expressed his disapproval of the incident in a statement and emphasised that individuals found guilty of damaging national assets will face severe legal consequences.
“Railway assets are national assets. Acts of vandalism endanger passengers’ safety and sabotage the Renewed Hope infrastructure drive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration,” Opeifa stated.
He stated that the NRC would take legal action against any person or organization, including staff, who are proven guilty of vandalism, without making any exceptions.
It is worth emphasizing that the damage of railway assets has become a recurrent concern. About two weeks ago, the Warri-Itakpe Train had operational difficulties due to track vandalism before the damaged portion was repaired.
