After Chinedu Obidigwe, a former member of the Anambra State House of Representatives, demanded accountability for his performance as a lawmaker, a businessman named Mr. Chinedu Anaukwu took him to court.
The act was allegedly carried out by Obidigwe, who represented the Anambra East/West Federal Constituency, in 2023, just before the general election.
“I wrote in the Aguleri World Forum, a WhatsApp group, just before the general election in 2023, demanding accountability from Obidigwe, who was then recontesting to return to the House of Representatives,” the victim claims.
I informed him that he had served in the National Assembly for more than three years and that he should report to us on his accomplishments in the region and his constituency money before running for reelection.
His boys were upset about it, so one day he surrounded me with more than 13 goons and gave them the order to murder me. They assaulted me till I passed out.
Chief Gozie Obi, SAN, Anaukwu’s attorney, dropped the charges against the second and fifth defendants in the case, who were identified as Obidigwe’s assistants who took part in the assault, when the case was heard at Otuocha High Court in the Anambra East Local Government Area on Tuesday.
While the second defendant is said to be already late, the fifth was said not to have been served with the processes.
Obi who spoke to journalists, said: “Today is the first time the matter is coming up in court for pretrial hearing and in the course of the proceeding it came to light that the second defendant is late and since you can’t sue a dead person, we had to withdraw against him.
“Also, the fifth defendant was not served, but we wanted the case to progress, so we had to withdraw against him too, moreso when we know that the principal defendant is Obidigwe as all the others were just his aides, and acted under his instruction.”
Barrister Emmanuel Offoh, the lead defendant Obidigwe’s attorney, represented him during the session.
Later, the case was postponed to November 18 in order to continue pretrial proceedings before to the entire hearing.
In his pleas, the plaintiff, Anaukwu, requests the former Representative’s conviction and N200 million in recompense for his ordeal.
