Chidiebere Mbene, a suspect in the murder of Nwokedi Somtochukwu, a secondary school student, and the rape of his sister, has been taken into custody by the Anambra State Police Command. The police say that on Tuesday night, Mbene broke into the home of the victims’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. Nwokedi, who are teachers in the Unubi community, Nnewi South Local Government Area of the state. They learned that the masked suspect, carrying a pump-action gun, scaled the fence of the teachers’ compound, shot the boy at close range in the chest as soon as he saw him, raped the victim’s sister, and fled.According to information obtained by Saturday PUNCH, Somtochukwu had just arrived home on Sunday to celebrate the Easter break with his parents, who are both local educators.
Confirming the development in a statement on Friday, the spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, Tochukwu Ikenga, said the suspect was apprehended with the help of some members of the community.
Ikenga added that the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, had directed the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Awka, for a comprehensive investigation.
βThe suspect is allegedly involved in the murder of one Nwokedi Michael Somtochukwu, a 15-year-old boy in Unubi, Nnewi South Local Government Area, on April 15, 2025. The suspect also allegedly raped the elder sister of the deceased before fleeing the scene,β he said.
