According to the Gabonese National Football Federation (Fegafoot), Aaron Boupendza passed away after falling from the eleventh floor of a building in China.
“The Gabonese international died after a fall from the 11th floor of his building in China, where he was playing for Zhejiang FC,” the federation revealed in an official statement posted on social networking platform X.
They added, “At just 28 years old, Boupendza leaves us with the cherished memory of a remarkable striker who significantly impacted the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) held in Cameroon.”
Boupendza played for Gabon in the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), but the Panthers, as they were called, were disappointed to lose to Burkina Faso in the Round of 16.
Fegafoot and the larger Gabonese football community expressed their deepest sympathies to Boupendza’s family and loved ones in the wake of his passing, highlighting the significant loss experienced by the sport as a whole.
The president-elect of Gabon, Brice Oligui Nguema, expressed his sorrow via X, stating, “It is with immense sadness that I learn of the tragic death of Aaron Boupendza, a gifted centre-forward who brought honour to Gabonese football.”
Regarding the circumstances of Boupendza’s premature death, broadcaster Gabon 24 stated that “the exact circumstances of this tragedy are still unclear,” and that officials have begun an investigation to determine the incident’s facts.
Boupendza was born in Moanda, Gabon, and joined the French team Bordeaux in 2016 to start his professional career. He spent a considerable amount of time on loan at several French clubs throughout his stay there.
He moved to Hatayspor in Turkey in 2020, where he excelled and finished as the league’s top scorer for the 2020–2021 campaign. He later moved to Al Arabi in Qatar, where he won the Qatar FA Cup, and then to Al Shabab in the Saudi Pro League as a result of his success.
In addition, he played for FC Cincinnati in the United States and Rapid Bucharest in Romania before moving to China in January to join Zhejiang FC.
