Adeleke, APC clash over market revenue collection

Ademola Adeleke, the governor of Osun State, and the state’s All Progressives Congress clashed on Sunday about who should be in charge of collecting market rates in local government districts. They even made arrest threats against one another. Osun local councils have been led by APC-elected chairmen since February. However, Adeleke instructed the council members and PDP chairmen who were elected on February 21 to skip work.

On Sunday, Osun State’s All Progressives Congress and Governor Ademola Adeleke argued about who should be in charge of collecting market rates in local government districts. They even threatened to arrest each other. Since February, the chairman of Osun local councils have been chosen by the APC. Adeleke, however, gave the PDP chairmen and council members who were elected on February 21 instructions to boycott work.

Given that the APC has previously appealed their removal from office, he claimed that this behavior also disrespects the court. The APC responded by telling Adeleke to cease breaking the Constitution and requesting that Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun direct the Osun Commissioner of Police to look into the state government’s purported plan to use fictitious police officers to attack certain council officials who are trying to maintain order in markets.

According to APC spokesperson Kola Olabisi, the state administration has employed a number of strategies to prevent APC council officials elected in 2022 from going back to work since the Appeal Court in Akure reinstated them on February 10.

However, Adeleke contended that the APC chairman are not lawfully in office. The police should take action before things get out of control, he stated, adding that “the same illegal taskforce officials have begun issuing the fake documents like local government identification letters, market revenue receipts, etc., to the members of the public.”
