Political parties and candidates contesting the upcoming November 1 local government elections in Niger State have formally signed a peace accord to ensure the exercise remains credible and violence-free.
The agreement was facilitated by the Niger State Police Command, led by Commissioner Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Minna. Attendees included representatives from the Niger State Independent Electoral Commission (NSIEC), the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), security agencies, and government officials.
Commissioner Elleman pledged that the police would act with professionalism and impartiality to maintain a safe environment throughout the election, urging youths to avoid violence. NSIEC Chairman Mohammed Imam detailed the commission’s 15-point guideline for electing 25 council chairmen and 274 councilors across the state’s 4,950 polling units.
IPAC Chairman Isah Makujeri praised the preparatory cooperation between NSIEC and the Police. Crucially, the peace accord prohibits the use of ethnic, religious, or inflammatory language, with all parties committing to strict adherence.
A peace accord is always a good start, now we just have to hope the politicians remember where they signed the dotted line!
