Alaafin rejects the appointment of Oyo’s new Chief Imam.

The ancient town’s Alaafin, Oba Akeem Owoade, has denied reports that a new Chief Imam has been appointed, calling the rumors untrue and deceptive.

The palace clarified in a statement issued on Monday by Bode Durojaiye, the Alaafin’s Director of Media and Publicity, that no appointment has been made and that the selection process for a new Chief Imam is still in progress.

The Alaafin’s Palace has taken notice of baseless rumors that point to the appointment of a new Chief Imam for Oyo. Oyo residents and the public at large are urged to reject such unfounded allegations. The statement stated that no one had been chosen to fill the prestigious position of Islamic leadership.

The palace stressed that the only person with the constitutional and customary power to name the Chief Imam of Oyo is the Alaafin.

Assuring the populace that proper consultations are being conducted and that the legitimate candidate will be formally announced at the proper time, Oba Owoade also urged them to remain calm and patient.

The statement also stated that His Imperial Majesty, the Alaafin of Oyo, alone has the authority to name a Chief Imam.
