After Real Madrid’s extra-time defeat to FC Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final, the disciplinary committee of the Spanish Football Federation has imposed a six-match suspension on Antonio Rudiger and a two-match ban on his teammate Lucas Vázquez.
Antonio Rudiger and Vázquez have faced penalties for their actions during the match’s final moments, whereas Jude Bellingham, their teammate, has had his red card officially revoked.
Remember that the match ended controversially, with emotions peaking in the final moments, especially concerning the officiating by referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea.
According to the official report, Rudiger, who had been substituted, faced a red card in the 120th minute for “throwing an object from the technical area” and required restraint from coaching staff due to his noticeable frustration.
Although Vázquez was also off the pitch at that moment, he received a penalty for coming back onto the field to express his disagreement with the referee’s decision.
In contrast, Bellingham was shown a red card for allegedly approaching the officials in an aggressive manner; but, upon reviewing video evidence, it became clear that this was not true.
After thorough deliberation, the committee determined that Bellingham’s conduct was inconsistent with the referee’s description.
They stated there was “a different reality than that reflected in the referee’s report,” noting no evidence of aggression or need for restraint from his teammates. As a result, he had his red card revoked and faced no additional penalties.
Rudiger publicly apologized on social media, taking responsibility and showing remorse. However, the committee considered the severity of his actions to warrant a six-game suspension without leniency.
To make matters even more complex, Rudiger is in the process of recuperating from knee surgery and could be out of action for as long as two months. This may impact his involvement in the rest of the season and the forthcoming Club World Cup.
