Hon. Mohammed Shehu, member of the House of Representatives representing Fagge Federal Constituency, has raised alarm that Kwanar Gogo community in Kano faces the risk of being completely submerged by gully erosion if immediate action is not taken.
Speaking with journalists in Kano on Thursday, Shehu lamented that residents have endured over 20 years of severe land degradation without a permanent solution. He said the disaster has already destroyed properties and endangered lives, accusing authorities of neglect despite repeated appeals.
The lawmaker criticized the lack of concrete action from the Ecological Fund Office, despite several inspections and surveys. He also distanced himself from reports that N2 billion had been released to tackle the issue, stressing the need for transparency and accountability.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics, Kano State received more than N2 billion from the Ecological Fund between January and May 2025 through FAAC. Shehu added that he has moved motions of urgent public importance on the erosion problem and sponsored bills addressing ecological and developmental challenges in his constituency.
He called on the Federal Government to step in immediately to protect Kwanar Gogo residents and prevent further destruction of lives and property.
