Mujahid Asari-Dokubo, a former militant leader in the Niger Delta and the former commander of the now-defunct Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force, has said that he will no longer back Yoruba politicians, claiming that they have betrayed him and the Ijaw people.
Asari-Dokubo announced his new political affiliation with Northern politicians in a video posted on social media on Monday. He characterized them as courteous and consistent, in contrast to their Yoruba counterparts.
We have been deceived by the Yorubas. They abandoned us after everything we did,” he remarked.
Reflecting on past alliances, Asari-Dokubo expressed dismay that the sacrifices made by the Ijaw for southern solidarity were not reciprocated.
He also cited past elections and conflicts over governance as instances in which the Ijaw stood up for the South only to be deserted.
For our fathers, who were right to create alliances with the North, I felt sorry. We shall now carry on that same alliance as young men,” he said.
With reference to recent political realignments and what he sees as the South-West’s lack of devotion, Asari-Dokubo declared that going ahead, “As of today, I will now work, work, work and form alliance with the North to crush out opposition.”
