The Benue State Government has immediately prohibited graduation celebrations for students in the state’s kindergarten, nursery, and primary schools.
This was revealed Tuesday in Makurdi by Mrs. Helen Nambativ, the Acting Commissioner of the Ministry of Education and Knowledge Management, in an interview with the Nigerian News Agency, NAN.
Any school that disobeys the directive faces penalties, including temporary closure, she warned.
She claims that the measure was implemented by the state government as part of a new education policy that aims to instill order and discipline in the basic education system.
She emphasized that the directive, which went into effect right away, was intended to save parents needless costs and shift the emphasis back to academic achievement rather than extracurricular activities.
Nambativ, who is also the permanent secretary of the ministry, went on to warn that schools that violate the policy during the 2025–2026 school year risk having their licenses revoked. She also disclosed that a task force will be established to guarantee adherence.
NAN remembers that the ministry had already informed schools of the government’s decision in a memo dated August 21.
According to the memo, the goal of the policy was to relieve parents of financial strain while refocusing funds on important learning objectives.
