According to a sociocultural organization called the Ochetoha K’Idoma, the state’s relaxation of the rule against open grazing is the reason behind the ongoing murders of Benue people.
In an exclusive interview with DAILY POST on Friday, Magaji Mike Alidu, the group’s president, said that the Fulani herders’ ultimatum from the state’s two paramount rulers was not the reason behind the recent attack on Benue, which claimed over 200 lives.
According to Alidu, the reason the herders were resisting was because the Benue people had united and demanded that the herders go.
“They assaulted our people before, during, and after the ultimatum, and they are still attacking us now, thus the tragic killing of more than 200 people was not caused by the ultimatum.
They are assaulting us in this way because the state is loosening its laws against open grazing. This would not have been occurring if the law had been in effect.
Because it is agricultural season and the Benue people must return to their farms, the youth of the traditional council have united and requested them to go, which is why they are resisting, he said.
