The Benue State House of Assembly is expected to take strong action to control the state’s rapidly rising rental costs, especially in the state’s largest cities.
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Aondona Dajoh, and Hon. Gbenda Terver have set a critical stakeholders’ meeting for July 15, 2025, in an effort to address growing concerns over housing affordability.
Landlords, real estate brokers, and a few chosen tenants will gather at the meeting to discuss the growing expense of rental housing.
It is anticipated that the consultation engagement will investigate the underlying reasons for the ongoing rent increase and look for workable ways to lessen the financial strain on residents.
According to Assembly sources who spoke to the Daily Post, the lawmakers hope the exchange would shed light on the difficulties experienced by both landlords and renters, serving as the foundation for an equitable and comprehensive rent control system.
The House is getting close to making a final judgment on proposed legislation to control rent throughout the state, lawmakers also acknowledged.
This comes after a surge in public uproar about expensive housing, particularly in Makurdi, Gboko, and Otukpo.
