Mudashiru Obasa’s dismissal as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly was ruled unlawful and unconstitutional by the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja.
Justice Yetunde Pinheiro invalidated the House’s January resolutions and actions that resulted in Obasa’s removal in a ruling on Wednesday.
Mojisola Meranda, the newly appointed Speaker, and the Lagos State House of Assembly were sued by Obasa, who contested the legitimacy of the procedure that led to his dismissal.Obasa, accompanied by Chief Afolabi Fashanu, his attorney, contended that 36 legislators had decided to remove him while the Assembly was on recess and he was abroad.
He insisted that the meeting was unlawful since it was called without his consent or a formal delegation of authority, which was against House rules.
The complaint was founded on nine grounds, including pertinent sections of the Lagos State House of Assembly’s Standing Orders and the 1999 Constitution (as modified).
