Simon Ekpa, the self-declared head of the Indigenous People of Biafra Government in Exile, was given a six-year prison sentence by a Finnish district court for crimes related to terrorism. According to BASEMEDIA NEWS, Ekpa was taken into custody by Finnish authorities on November 21, 2024, after the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) looked into claims that he had used social media to incite terrorism and promote violence, actions that were thought to have fueled unrest in southeast Nigeria.
The Päijät-Häme District Court ruled that the charge was founded on “public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent,” alleged offenses spanning August 2021 to November 2024, and remanded Ekpa in custody after his arrest.Ekpa’s assets, along with those of his associates and affiliated businesses, were also frozen by the NBI during this time.
