Eleven condemned individuals who were on death row have received unconditional state pardons from Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago.
This was revealed by Mr. Nasiru Mu’azu, the state attorney general and commissioner for justice, during a press briefing on Tuesday in Minna, the state capital.
“The inmates participated in a communal conflict between the Gaba and Anfani communities in the state’s Lavun Local Government area, which resulted in the loss of life and property,” he said.
Following a written request that was further examined by the governor and the State Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy, the commissioner declared that the state pardon constituted an act of the governor’s constitutional authority.
He added that multiple discussions had been held and all issues had been settled, and that the “State pardon is also part of the reconciliatory efforts to ensure lasting peace between both communities.”
In response to inquiries from media professionals regarding the plight of other groups or individuals dealing with comparable problems, the commissioner suggested that they draft a written request for consideration.
According to him, the Instrument of Pardon was gazetted and signed on May 28.
Mohammed Mohammed, Nana Sheshi, Isah Nmadu, Mohammed Mohammed Ndabida, Abubakar Salihu, and Baba Shaba are among those who have been pardoned.
Adamu Babaminin, Ibrahim Mohammed, Mohammed Isah, Haruna Mohammed, and Isah Mohammed Alhaji Inuwa are the others.
