In the midst of countrywide grief for the recent Yelewata massacre, popular comedian Efe Warriboy has criticized Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia for announcing Wednesday, June 18, as a public holiday in order to welcome President Bola Tinubu to the state.
According to the DAILY POST, the Benue State government announced Wednesday as a public holiday in honor of Tinubu during his one-day visit to the state. The statement was issued by Secretary to the State Government Serumun Deborah Ambe on Tuesday, and it called on citizens to “come out en-masse” to greet the president.
Efe Warriboy responded in a video message posted on his Instagram page, saying that Governor Alia’s decision to declare a public holiday in response to the president’s visit to the state was a mockery of the Benue people who had lost a loved one.”I’m doing everything I can to avoid being rude while making this video, but it would be challenging given this situation,” he remarked. The current events in Benue State demonstrate that if you are in a position of authority in Nigeria, a demon will infiltrate you, regardless of your title—whether you are a senior pastor or a reverend father. I have observed that. It becomes worse when you join the APC. They are all the same, even PDP.
“Just imagine the nonsense declaration of public holiday over President Tinubu’s first in Benue. The Governor is even supposed to be in a state of mourning and not telling people, who just lost their family members, to come and celebrate Tinubu’s visit.
“A man said in a viral video that he lost 20 family members. But the most important to the Governor is welcoming Tinubu. The president is supposed to sneak into the state and not expect heroic welcome. Is he coming to commission a project or dead bodies?
“What is wrong with you, Nigerian politicians? What Governor Alia is doing is simply playing politics with the lives of Benue people. He is trying not to do anything that will make his political overlords deny him his re-election ticket in 2027.
If not, how would you account for this absurdity? What is he welcoming Tinubu as? Did he construct a factory that the president will be visiting to inaugurate? Just the latest killings have resulted in the deaths of almost 200 persons. You’re asking the same folks who are grieving for their loved ones to come out and greet President Tinubu.
Politicians, even if you have no morals or have a contract with a foreign corporation to lower Nigeria’s population, you should not make fun of the people. because that is how it has begun to appear. I missed [Samuel] Ortom, the former governor of Benue State. He was quite outspoken about the state’s murders. As a Reverend Father, you were expected to be impartial when it came to your turn as governor, yet you let many people down.
