Ejimakor: Nnamdi Kanu’s trial can only be ended by President Tinubu.

Aloy Ejimakor, the lead counsel for the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, asserted on Monday that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu holds the sole authority to conclude his client’s prolonged trial. Posting on his official X handle, Ejimakor stated that if the President genuinely wants to resolve the matter, he can simply stop the prosecution. Ejimakor wrote, “As it stands, it lies with President Tinubu to free Mazi Nnamdi Kanu because once the President halts the prosecution, the trial ends. In other words, the buck stops at the President’s table.” Although he places the ultimate decision with the President, he also acknowledged that the courts have a separate role in ensuring justice, adding, “Nonetheless, the courts can step in to stem the tide of injustice.” Ejimakor’s statement coincides with peaceful protests held across parts of the Southeast and Abuja on Monday, where supporters demanded Kanu’s release from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), where he has been held since June 2021.
