The Edo State Police Command has rescued 11 passengers who were kidnapped by gunmen during a late-night ambush on the Benin-Lagos Expressway. The incident took place around 11:55 p.m. on December 20 near Isiuwa, where attackers first opened fire on an Audi vehicle before intercepting a Toyota Hiace bus traveling from Lagos to Akwa Ibom.
The gunmen forced the passengers into the bush, but a rapid deployment of police operatives led to the successful rescue of 11 individuals. Those recovered include Alhaji Mustapha Urmar, Queen Ogbowan, Blessing Ofem, Gift Sunday, Asngua Adakama, Ime Edet, Abasi Okon Nduye, Blessing Augustine Akpan, Thomas Kollins, Happiness Moses, and Victoria Nkemie.
Tragically, the bus driver, Ubong Edet Okon, sustained injuries during the assault and was confirmed dead after being rushed to Igbinedion University Teaching Hospital. His remains have been moved to the morgue for an autopsy. Authorities confirmed that two passengers are still missing, and intensive search operations are ongoing to secure their release and apprehend the perpetrators.
