At the age of 36, Joe Thompson, a former midfielder in Manchester United’s academy, passed away.
The news of his passing on Friday was “devastated,” according to his old team, Rochdale.
According to a statement released by Rochdale, the former midfield player passed away “peacefully at home with his family by his side” on Thursday.
Thompson, who joined Rochdale from Manchester United’s academy in 2005, made more than 200 appearances for the team.
The former midfielder was described as “a warm personality who had a deep connection with our club from a young age” in a tribute that the team placed on X.
In 2019, Thompson announced his retirement from the NFL. In 2024, he received a third cancer diagnosis.
Prior to his passing, he played for Southport, Carlisle United, Bury, Tranmere Rovers, and Wrexham.
