Experts Advocate for Refinery Sales Despite N2.92 Trillion Investment in 2024

Experts have suggested that the government sell the refineries rather than undertaking unnecessary restoration, since the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) is still unsure about what to do with the nation’s refineries. Recall that between 2015 and 2022, the federal government, led by former President Muhammadu Buhari, spent $3.7 billion restoring the refineries. The Warri refinery received $900 million (N1.2 trillion in 2025), the Kaduna refinery received $1.3 billion, and the Port Harcourt refinery received $1.5 billion (N2.1 trillion in 2025). The Port Harcourt Refinery was reportedly finished in December 2024 and operational until May 2025, despite the fact that none of the restoration work were finished during his term.
