Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr. P, is a Nigerian musician who has spoken out about his family’s manipulation and betrayal of him for more than 20 years.
According to Naija News, this follows the singer’s testimony in a high-profile case before the Federal High Court in Lagos, where Jude Okoye, his older brother and former manager, is charged with money laundering and allegedly diverting royalties from their now-defunct band P-Square.
Jude Okoye and his company, Northside Music Limited, are facing seven charges from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission that include money laundering charges totaling N1.38 billion, $1 million, and £34,537.59.
On Tuesday, April 15, 2025, Peter posted on his Instagram story to encourage people not to keep quiet about familial abuse, emphasizing that he had done so for the last 20 years.
Mr. P stated that his sanity mattered and that he is now putting his mental health first. He claimed that a family is not family if it steals, discriminates, or overlooks one’s suffering.
“Don’t let your family be the reason you’re drowning in silence,” he wrote. For more than 20 years, I did. And I nearly lost everything as a result. However, I’ve learned that family doesn’t steal from you, love doesn’t control, and loyalty doesn’t betray.
“Family that takes advantage of you isn’t really family.” Genuine family doesn’t take advantage of you, embarrass you, treat you unfairly, or disregard your suffering.
“My sanity is important. I put my mental well-being first. It’s too costly if it affects my emotional well-being.
